Budgies are very popular because they are playful, happy, peaceful and frugal. It’s great fun to watch them as they curiously explore their surroundings. They can do well on their own, but also like to be around their humans. Often they even become trusting and tame. That is why they are particularly popular with “beginners”.

Are you gifted with languages?
Yes! It is often said that parrots are much more talented, but budgies are surprisingly good at learning and repeating speech and phrases. The best proof of this is in the Guinness Book of Records: In September 2010, “Oskar” was officially named the “bird that knows the most words”. He lives in Germany and can speak 148 words. A budgerigar that has unfortunately died in the meantime even had a vocabulary of 1,728 words.
Budgies, are they very noisy?
This is a frequently asked question. On the one hand, there is a great desire for the birds to speak and say funny words, and on the other hand, they should sit quietly on command and not disturb. You can’t do both! So you have to live with a certain amount of “noise” – or get an electronic pet.

Budgies are not loners. They need the company of conspecifics and must therefore always be kept in pairs (opposite sexes). Imagine living the rest of your life with an orangutan in the jungle. It might sound funny and exciting at first, but you can’t talk to him and you would become very sad with loneliness. They are simply happier in a group with their own kind.

Free flight from the budgerigar
Budgies need lots of free flight. This does not mean that the animals are allowed out of the cage for half an hour, but for several hours a day. The longer the better! Just as we humans like to “stretch our legs”, go for walks and enjoy exercise, birds also like to spread their wings and fly.
A separate bird room would be ideal, in which the pets can fly around freely all day long. It can be a lot of fun lovingly designing such a room and implementing creative ideas. By the way, not only budgerigars have the need to fly, but all birds!

This is easy to spot in budgies. Look at the beak: at the top of the beak is what’s known as the “skin of wax,” right at the base that connects the beak to the head. This skin is bluish in male budgerigars and brown in females.
Colorful colors
Their natural color is light green and yellow with black bands/stripes. Budgerigars are now available in many other colors, e.g. B. Sky Blue, White-Blue, Olive Green and Dark Green.
Origin of budgerigars
Budgies originate from Australia. There they live in open areas, e.g. B. with grass-covered sand dunes, bush and shrubland and tree savannas.
